Raise the Bar for Inclusive Physical Activity

On Friday, April 29th, more than 500 students across Simcoe County and beyond will participate in the Raise the Bar Intramural Student Leadership Conference at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Barrie. The Raise the Bar conference is designed to increase the physical activity level of students through the use of intramural sports. Students at the conference will be trained as student leaders so they can return to their schools with the knowledge and skills to run intramural and house league programs in which every student can play.

"We are excited about the opportunity that this event is providing for students and it is an honour to be hosting it at one of our schools," said Lonnie Bolton, Superintendent of Education. "We know that physical activity is a key part of learning and growth - it helps students become engaged and attentive. Anything that we can do to make physical activity more inclusive in both elementary and secondary schools is important."

Raise the Bar is a foundational component of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s initiative to get students physically active for 60 minutes each day. The Raise the Bar conference invites students and teachers to learn more about the strategies required to organize a quality and sustainable intramural program at their schools. Minister of Education Liz Sandals is scheduled to attend the conference at noon to speak with the delegates. Her presentation will be followed by guest speaker Paralympian Jeff Adams.

“We are very pleased with the success of the program, “ says Raise the Bar Director Steve Friesen, “the response to the conferences has been excellent and the conference in Barrie will be our most successful one yet.” There are 78 schools and 500 participants attending the conference in Barrie hosted by St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School."
