Play Hockey, Fight Cancer

Jean Vanier, Girls Hockey

A energetic crowd gathered at Central Park Arena in Collingwood yesterday to watch Play Hockey, Fight Cancer.  Jean Vanier Catholic High School organized it's 12th annual fundraiser to support students in need within their school community as well as other local families.  In attendance to catch the action and support the cause were staff and students from St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School, the spirited Vanier Cheerleading squad, along with many Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board staff and parents .

The game featured both the Girls and Boys hockey teams from Jean Vanier and the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas Stingers.  While it was a close match in the Boys game, the Storm took the lead with ten minutes remaining in the third period to win the game 2-1.  On the Girls side, the Storm out-skated the Stingers with a score of 5-0.

For Co-Curricular Chairperson, Liz Payton, it is about much more than hockey.  Payton who started the hockey programs at Jean Vanier years ago commented, “It’s not about winning or losing today, but about the atmosphere and awareness that the event creates and the support it brings to families in need”.

Kudos to all participants for the fantastic work in raising funds and awareness for cancer!
